What a great day for gardening!

What a great day for gardening. My son came over today and continued digging the base for my greenhouse. I was lured out by the sunshine and have made a start on the overgrown and neglected hedge at the bottom of my garden. It’s been used as a dumping ground and I found boxes of empty beer cans under it. After my last blog you can imagine my response to that little find. My recycling boxes are filling up with other people’s bottles and cans.

Overgrown-hedge at the end of the garden

The hedge contains a young horse-chestnut tree, a silver birch, my large crab apple and a lot of overgrown privet. It’s this that needs taming. Once I’ve got the canopy down more light will get into the ground below, so by next spring, once I’ve cleared all the rubbish, I’ll be able to grow lots of spring flowers such as crocus and snowdrops, and perhaps some aconites. All early nectar plants for our insect population. If you’re interested in helping our struggling bees hoverflies and butterflies to thrive, there’s a previous post on this subject here, I’ve also got a list of native wildflowers to grow in the garden here. I’ll be posting more on this subject as this garden is intended to be as wildlife friendly as possible , and the more of us that help wildlife, the better our environment will be. The privet will thicken up in time and make a safe haven for birds and more places for them to nest. We have nest boxes already in the trees, but not all birds use them. Some prefer to hide away in a nice thick bush, so that’s what we’ll make for them.

Preparation-for-the-greenhouse

While doing all this work I’ve already seen bees out feeding from the crocus in my ealier post, and lots of ladybirds ready to attack the aphids that threaten plants. No doubt my garden will soon be buzzing. I love my new lifestyle!

I haven’t done this before. That is, I haven’t used my blog to vent frustrations. I care about the environment. I care about our wildlife. And I care about our country. England has a climate to be envied, flora and fauna that’s unique to us and threatened. We have species going extinct and others under massive decline. It’s all over the TV, it’s all over the net yet so many of us fail to act.

Rubbish! That’s what’s bugging me. Rubbish thrown out of car windows, wrappers dropped wherever folk are, regardless of provided bins, people’s private property or any regard for the countryside. When I was little, being taken out to the countryside on a Sunday for a picnic was a regular treat, and I clearly remember those trips. I loved looking at the hedgerows and fields full of cattle, sheep, birds and other animals. I was the kid with her bum sticking out of the hedgerow, intently watching a spider or woodlouse or field mouse.

Now I sadly look out of the window on trips to see piles of rubbish. Bin liners, carrier bags, crisp packets, beer cans, bottles, plastic strapping, oil drums. You name it, I’ve spotted it somewhere on a verge. Driving down any dual carriageway or motorway is a horrid sight and illustrates our contempt for our outdoor landscape.

What made me write about it today? The 80+ bits of plastic and other rubbish I found when tidying up my new front garden and clearing away the winter leaves etc. All inside half an hour. I’ll spare you photos of rubbish except for one photo, which I’ll explain later. No need for more. Just look out of your window, or windscreen next time you go out.

So come on, folk. Put that rubbish in a bin, take it home with you, put it in a pocket until you find a bin. And how about a radical idea? Pick up rubbish when you see it. The council won’t do it for you. They don’t have the resources. Anyway, would you rather the housing problem was addressed, or elderly people taken care of etc or all their money spent on cleaning up other people’s sheer laziness?

When I walk on the field behind my home I pick up bottles and cans etc and put them in my recycling. The ponies that graze there then won’t be harmed by it, nor will the other wildlife. And the place is more beautiful without ‘Stella’ twinkling in the grass or ‘Walkers’ blowing about. On the plus side, I found a large water container that will help drip feed my tomatoes this season for free!

Last summer on holiday, I was disgusted to see a lot of rubbish on a small Cornish beach packed with tourists. They watched in amazement as I went round picking it out of the rock pools. That’s the one picture. It doesn’t look as good as the rock pools, does it? And the animals that live on that beach can easily be killed by this plastic dross. Of course, I was there with my camera. So I spotted this stuff more readily than others. I collected two carrier bags full in less than half an hour, walked back up the beach to the bins provided and deposited the lot. To my surprise, others then did the same, and I heard one set of parents making their kids pick up what they’d dropped. I like to think I pricked a few consciences. Have I pricked yours? Can you persuade others that rubbish is rubbish and shouldn’t be part of our landscape? Can you set a good example? Don’t we deserve a clean, gorgeous environment? Doesn’t our wildlife deserve a break?

Beach rubbish

Take a closer look at the last photograph. If you click into it you can enlarge it. In the foreground you can see white plastic strapping wound in the seaweed. It shouldn’t be there and will harm the beach’s rightful inhabitants. THINK before you drop it.

TAKE PRIDE in our countryside. Preserve what we have, don’t destroy it. Please. Then spread the word. Share this blog. Thanks!

I’ve just taken stock of the 8 spring flowers already open in my garden and pots. Some I brought from my old home, others were waiting for me in my new one. All of these will make nectar and pollen available for the early pollinating insects that will soon be emerging for food, especially as a warm spell is predicted later this week.

Bees, hoverflies and butterflies, moths and beetles are all in decline, and are massively important for humans. Without them we would not eat. No apples and pears, no tomatoes or plums, blackberries or raspberries; the list is endless. They pollinate our food for us for free. We owe them a lot, and it doesn’t take much to help them get back their strength. So if you are starting a new garden or trying to improve your garden for wildlife and biodiversity, go to your garden centre and buy things with SINGLE flowers, not flouncy doubles. Plant them out in groups, making them easier for the insects to spot, and watch your garden come alive. If we all do this, we can turn around an alarming decline in our insect population. This is ecologically very important for all of us.

Fifteen days ago my garden looked like this!

Sarah Raven’s Bees, Butterflies and blooms is an excellent programme with lots more information that you can glean to help you make a difference. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01c89vp/Bees_Butterflies_and_Blooms_Towns_Gardens_and_Britain_in_Bloom/

There are many more early spring flowers that will help our insects to recover from the lack of food and habitat we’ve caused for them. You can find more listed here. http://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/features/wildlife/plants-for-bees/1107.html

Time to put something back, don’t you think? So get planting. Let me know how you are helping our wildlife.

Iced Hebe

At last the snow and ice has melted and the temperature is above freezing. So the last couple of days I’ve been able to relieve the cabin fever that had struck me. I’ve made a start on pruning the native hedging growing down one border of the garden. It has been neglected and needed a hard prune to help thicken and strengthen it. Not to mention the increased light levels in the rest of the garden now it’s been brought down to about 6′ tall instead of double that! I’ve also taken courage in both hands and done some pruning on a fairly mature apple tree. It was leaning far too far into the centre of the garden, and perilously close to where we want to site the greenhouse.

My poor hebe has also defrosted and is looking good. How about those brave crocus, too, flowering in the snow? I had to get photographs of them. Click on the pictures to enlarge.

Iced Crocus

We’ve erected a ‘man shed’ for all Jon’s tools and clutter which I’ve also painted in the last day or two in ‘forest green’ to help it blend in. I’ve discovered that the birds don’t notice me at all when I use it as a hide, so as soon as I can cope with sitting out there with the camera, I hope to get some good close-ups of them raiding the food I put out daily.

My son started on the greenhouse base but then the snow came, so now it’s gone I’ll get him back to finish the job. I’ll then have an 8′ x 12′ greenhouse for all my growing needs! Currently, there are seeds coming through on the windowsill in the conservatory. So far parsley, sweet peas and tomatoes are making their entrance into the world.

I’m doing several types of tomato. There’s one called Roma, which is a plum type like the tinned ones we cook with. Why buy tinned if you can have fresh? I reason that as long as I can bottle or freeze a surplus we will save money and the use of tins. Then there’s a cherry variety for salads. They came through first. Lastly, I got some tomato Marmade – big slicable Italian ones that you can grill, eat raw or cook with. I’ve not grown those before so I’m looking forward to sampling them. I’d better get the basil seeds on to flavour all those lovely toms!

Incidentally, toilet tubes are great for any deep-rooted plants when sowing seeds. I’m using them to sow sweet peas, french beans, broad beans and carrots. I’ve had to ask friends to save empty tubes for me. More recycling, less pots to store as they rot down when you plant them, tube and all, and no root disturbance for the seedlings. As I want to grow everything organically, this method is perfect.

Odd Potato

Growing your own sometimes has unexpected benefits, not just environmental and financial ones. In this case it was amusement. Here’s a potato that grew last year. I wonder what I’ll dig up in this years crop?

It’s winter in our paradise! Well, we’ve now experienced our first really cold spell in our new home. Birds flock in for the food and the fields look stunning in the snow and fog. It’s truly beautiful, I think you’ll agree. My tactic of feeding as many different foods for the birds seems to be working, as we’re now up to 21 different species spotted visiting our environment at one point or another. Here are one or two I managed to photograph yesterday after a blizzard of several inches of the white stuff fell overnight. The quality isn’t brilliant, as I had to hide in the shed and shoot through fog to get these shots, but at least we get to see who’s visiting.

We’re really pleased with the log burning stove, too. Once that’s going in the evening, we hardly need the central heating at all. In fact we went to bed with the heating off when the snow was falling and woke to find snow had filled the vent outside, which we had to clear before using the heating again. The stove had kept the house warm all night! Less gas used, bill reduced, carbon fuel use reduced, all better for the envitonment just as we planned. I’m loving this lifestyle!

Here are a couple of shots taken since the snow. The garden looks beautiful, don’t you think?

I’ve taken advantage of the mild weather and spent time today hacking through the jungle that is my border. I now have a mountain of dead growth culled off the garden. Underneath, I’ve found some little gems, in my book anyway. Sedums, bergenia (in flower!) and ferns galore adorn a badly neglected ‘rockery’ currant bun style. It will need a major overhaul, as it’s choked with couch grass and brambles threaten nearby. But with work and a change of rockery construction I’m sure will look stunning. It’s a border that backs onto our patio, so I want it to look good as well as attract wildlife. My lifestyle as well as the wildlife’s is important!

bird cam goldfinches

I also found, on the other border, a bird’s nest from last year. I feel rather guilty for clearing this area, as the nest site clearly won’t be available for this years birds, but as I’m planning more hedge planting and will be getting the current one into shape there will ultimately be more places for them to nest, not less. We’ve already put a nest box high in a tree and have another one to go up, making four in total.

Bird cam was left on video setting today, and caught a lot of goldfinches and greenfinches plundering the feeders. But the quality wasn’t good. We had a the distance setting a little out, and sunlight staring into the lens, so I need to think more carefully before setting it up next time. It’s all a learning experience! One or two of the jpegs came out OK, so they’re here for you, as is a photograph of the found nest. Anyone know what species made it? The secateurs are there for scale.

bird nest found in the garden

In the trees at the bottom of the garden, I counted 30+ goldfinches. They don’t all come to the feeders at once, but I’m sure take turns in groups of six to ten at a time. A charm of goldfinches, if ever I saw one. They have to be among our prettiest native species.

bird cam goldfinches and greenfinches

I’ve been really busy the last couple of days actually making a start in my new garden. I’m faced with overgrown, neglected beds that need renovation. Before I can dig them over, I need to wait for spring to assess what’s already there. I’ve been able to dig out some brambles, cut down dead overgrowth and identify snowdrops and crocosmia so I’ve started at last to be able to see what comes up when spring comes. But of course it’s dark by 4.30pm, so the long evenings are spent blogging to you and dreaming of what I will grow. I brought a lot of stuff from my old garden in containers, and they all sit on the patio awaiting replanting. Many of them are native plants suitable for gardens which will be rich in nectar and pollen for our insects to feast on.

This will help keep a balance in the ecology of the garden and hopefully increase the diversity. I’ve made a wildlife poster to illustrate the 12 wild flowers to grow in my garden. There will be more, but these are particular favourites I wanted to share with you.

wild flower poster

Incidentally, I’ve put this poster for sale, so if you want a copy just click here.

What wild flower can you add to your garden this spring?

Here are 5 winter fresh greens to grow so easily you’ll be amazed and wonder why you haven’t done it sooner. You can buy special sprouting seed trays, which stack and drain very easily, but why not re-cycle a jam or coffee jar and some old tights? That’s all you need to grow these nutritious fresh greens. Add to salads, sprinkle into stir-fires or use as a vitamin packed garnish costing a fraction of those at the supermarket and once you’ve bought a pack of seeds you don’t have to go shopping (carbon and money-saving even more). They’re also organically grown if you think about it. Water and no additives!

All sprouted seeds have a higher concentration of vitamins and minerals than their fully grown counterparts, as the nutrition in concentrated in them so they can grow. The content of each varies, but they’re all great for you and at this stage sweeter, tastier and more crunchy. To see more detail, click into the picture.

sprouted seed winter greens

I grew all of these in less than a week from opening the packet of seeds to putting them on the plate. All you do is place a tablespoon or so of seeds into a large jar or layer of a seed sprouter, covering the end of the jar with a bit of old tights or stocking. Secure this with an elastic band. Rinse them with room temperature water, drain and leave on the windowsill ( but not in bright sunlight). Do this twice a day until the sprouts have reached the size you want to eat. Some have rough seed coats that you might not want to chew, but if you put the grown sprouts into a bowl of water and stir, most of the husks will float and you can scoop them off and put them in the compost bin. Nothing wasted, ecologically!

Some sprouts, such as mung beans, used in stir fries, are better grown in the dark to make the sprouts grow longer and juicier before they go tough and bitter. Just pop them in a kitchen cupboard between waterings. And beware! Not all seeds can be sprouted. Many of the bean family are poisonous raw, so don’t try to sprout runner, French, kidney or other true beans. Check a seed catalogue for the most appropriate ones. Thompson and Morgan and Kings Seeds do good ranges. You don’t have to pay through the nose, though, for tiny packets from specialist seed growers. I buy standard packets of mung beans and whole lentils from the supermarket and they sprout perfectly well. Children would find these sprouts very rewarding as they grow so fast, teaching them how things grow and maybe getting them to eat their greens into the bargain.

But among those you can sprout are:

radish

onion

spring onion

mung beans

alfalfa

lentils (whole or they won’t grow)

chickpea

sunflower

fenugreek

We started with five and ended with nine. There are many more for you to discover. Bonus! Let me know what you grow on your windowsill. Any recipe ideas?

I’ve spent the day clearing one of the very neglected flower beds in my new garden. There were brambles waiting to get me as soon as I stepped in it, so first I had to cut them back. Then slash off the 3ft high dried couch grass and other annoying weeds. It’s all stuff I can’t compost or burn as it’s wet through. So into the council recycling container it goes. This seems to be the best ecological solution for such difficult rubbish. I will be growing organically, but need compost not choked with weeds and thorns. I also found lengths of timber, which will go into our temporary wood store to dry, and will be used to keep us warm!

So I haven’t played with bird cam but have burned some calories and have, finally, made a bit of headway towards my goals out there. Jon’s temporary wood store is made from an old wooden shelving unit designed for use in a shed. We have an excess of them now he’s cleared out some of his old stuff, so with a bit of cladding down the sides and some lino left in the shed when we moved in here, we can keep the rain off the found wood and allow it to dry out for later use. Nothing is wasted here! What can you recycle?

houseleek

I’ve also been looking at the plants I brought from my old garden to the new one and checking what is here. I seem to have plenty of houseleeks and a bare shed roof. If it’s feasible, I may make a green roof with the houseleeks. Green rooves help to soak up rain, thereby recucing flood risk. Natures environment is further helped by giving insects a home and food, then the birds benefit from the insects. Ecological improvement all round!

Bird Cam

My lifestyle has improved no end since we moved here. I’m already meeting new people at the local radio station cafe and the local people are so friendly. I spent a happy couple of hours today at the knit and natter group at the station cafe. As I only crochet, I took the baby blanket I’m making for my first grandson, due in March. Joking about being a happy hooker has perhaps caused a re-naming of the group, as it caused much hilarity! On top of that, despite only being here a few weeks I’ve already clocked 18 species of bird in my humble garden. Already spotted are:

Blue tits

Great Tits

Coal Tits

Goldfinches

Greenfinches

Bull finches

Heron (after next door’s fish no doubt)

Crows (a murder of them live in the trees outside)

Jackdaws

Chaffinches

Magpies

Robin

Sparrows

Wood pigeons

Collared Doves

Pied Wagtail

Starling

Thrush

If I can get so many to visit already, imagine the wildlife that might come once I’ve finished planting more hedging and improved the environment for them. Hopefully some will nest (except pigeons and collared doves if I’m to grow veggies).

So I’ve had fun with my new bird cam, a Christmas present from my lovely Jon. It can be set up and left to take photographs remotely relying on a sensor to catch the birds as they come in. I’ve had to be patient and get used to using it, plus delete a lot of empty feeder shots with the windy weather we’ve had but today was perfect, so here are a few lovely close-ups of some of my visitors feasting my cash away! It’s easy photography with great results. A local squirrel tries his luck at the feeders, so I put a few nuts on the ground for him, and have had to intsall a cat scarer aimed around the feeding station.

Bird Cam goldfinch

Nature needs a helping hand sometimes. At this time of year it’s really important to keep those feeders topped up, because the birds soon come to rely on their local breakfast and may die if their food supply suddenly runs out. It’s also important to keep the feeders clean. Greenfinches are suffering currently from an infection running through their population, and it can be passed on via dirty feeders. Luckily, the ones I’ve spotted seem perfectly healthy.

Bird Cam Finches

What birds visit your garden?
